What is Parathyroid Surgery?

Parathyroid surgery, better known as a parathyroidectomy, is a procedure in which we remove at least one of the parathyroid glands or extract a tumor affecting the parathyroid. Surgery can be daunting, but at Cernero Surgery & Aesthetics, our team provides the highest quality care to every patient to ensure the best outcomes possible. If you are wondering what is a parathyroid surgery or looking to learn more about the process, we are here to help!

The Endocrine System

The endocrine system, which controls our hormones, is comprised of glands that excrete different types of hormones to help balance the body’s internal systems. Some glands, like the thyroid and parathyroid, control your metabolism and the calcium levels for other organs. The parathyroid has four tiny glands, about the size of a grain of rice and is extremely important for regulating your musculoskeletal, circulatory and nervous systems.

Like many other organs in the body, the parathyroid can be affected by tumors. While most of these tumors are benign, they can still grow and cause issues, keeping the parathyroid from regulating correctly. In the case of a tumor, it is best to find a surgeon you trust and have it removed.

In other cases, the parathyroid can be overactive. If medication or other non-surgical options are not successful, it may require surgery.

What is Parathyroid Surgery and How Does it Work?

Dr. Aaron Cernero is a board-certified general surgeon specializing in minimally invasive, allowing for smaller incisions, better control and quicker recovery times. Before the procedure, a team of physicians will conduct tests and scans to properly observe the parathyroid and any tumors present and prepare the best course of action.

When it comes time for the parathyroidectomy, a patient will be placed under general anesthesia, and Dr. Cernero will perform a minimally invasive procedure to remove the tumor or

the overactive gland. Should more than one gland need removal, Dr. Cernero will conduct a bilateral neck exploration instead.

Results and Aftercare

Generally, after a parathyroidectomy, the patient can leave the hospital the same day or within a couple of days of the procedure. Patients may experience tenderness around the incision site and some soreness. For full details on post operative aftercare consult Dr. Cernero and his staff.

Most patients can immediately return to regular activities such as eating and drinking. Dr. Cernero works with all patients to customize care plans and ensure the best recovery for everyone. Recovery is typically quick but consult your physicians before returning to strenuous work such as intense workouts or heavy lifting.
