The Endocrine System
The endocrine system, which controls our hormones, is comprised of glands that excrete different types of hormones to help balance the body’s internal systems. Some glands, like the thyroid and parathyroid, control your metabolism and the calcium levels for other organs. The parathyroid has four tiny glands, about the size of a grain of rice and is extremely important for regulating your musculoskeletal, circulatory and nervous systems.
Like many other organs in the body, the parathyroid can be affected by tumors. While most of these tumors are benign, they can still grow and cause issues, keeping the parathyroid from regulating correctly. In the case of a tumor, it is best to find a surgeon you trust and have it removed.

What is Parathyroid Surgery and How Does it Work?

When it comes time for the parathyroidectomy, a patient will be placed under general anesthesia, and Dr. Cernero will perform a minimally invasive procedure to remove the tumor or
the overactive gland. Should more than one gland need removal, Dr. Cernero will conduct a bilateral neck exploration instead.
Results and Aftercare

Most patients can immediately return to regular activities such as eating and drinking. Dr. Cernero works with all patients to customize care plans and ensure the best recovery for everyone.
